Look, it was never going to be easy turning an insane concept like Sonic—a super-fast blue rodent with a ring fetish—into a broadly-appealing film, but Sonic the Hedgehog‘s absolute refusal to lean into its own weirdness has resulted in a predictably wholesome, blindingly forgettable experience.

Not only is Sonic a gaming hero to many, he has now become a "Hollywood Star". This movie "absolutely rocks" with a killer soundtrack to boot. Already hanging to see the sequel...

An on-form Jim Carrey can’t stop Sonic’s live-action debut from feeling like a missed opportunity. If the teased sequels do materialise, here’s hoping the storytelling levels up.

Carrey is the film's most prized weapon, letting us wallow in the ridiculousness of this whole enterprise without ever holding himself above it.

Sonic's look was famously corrected after the movie's trailer triggered something akin to online panic; perhaps fans should have been consulted on the script as well.

The production may have riled the internet months ago, with furor over the look of its first trailer sending FX crews back to work on a character redesign; but what's made it to the screen is light-hearted fun unlikely to offend anyone.

All in all, like its fast-moving, attention-deficient hero, this just feels like a rush job.

Sonic now resembles a cartoon hedgehog instead of a spray-painted marmot. But if anything was done to de-genericise the script, it hasn't helped.

Their truly epic bad decision, far worse than the original fussy humanoid design of Sonic, was to make the "Sonic" movie into one of those clunky live-action adventure comedies with a digitally animated generic weisenheimer plopped into the middle of it.

It all adds up to a film with very few surprises, but several happy treats. If you're in charge of an under-10 anytime soon, you'll be happy you had the excuse to go.
