When medics made their routine visit to the home of Buffalo professor and art activist Steve Kurtz after the sudden death of his wife, they assumed, to the amazement of all concerned, that the paraphernalia they found in the Kurtzs’ studio was being used to cultivate chemical weapons. Kurtz now awaits trial for the possession of biological materials freely available over the internet. Director Lynn Hershman has responded to the legal restrictions on Kurtz’s ability to discuss the case with a playful, if fundamentally frightening, drama/documentary about freedom of speech in Bush’s America.
