The Equalizer

Based on the 80's television series of the same name. The Equalizer is the trashy B-movie version of Taxi Driver. Robert McCall, played by Denzel Washington, is a former black ops agent beginning his ordinary new life working at a home improvement store. McCall becomes friends with a young prostitute named Teri, played by Chloe Grace Moretz. When Teri is abused and beaten up by Russian gangsters, McCall must save her and kill lots of bad guys. The Equalizer is stylishly directed by Antoine Fuqua and Denzel Washington is great. It's not that bad, but it's not that good either. The Equalizer would have been more fun if it wasn't so tedious. Boring sub-plots about McCall helping his co-worker friend lose weight to become a security guard. The lengthy 130 minute running time should be 90 minutes. Before being replaced by Antoine Fuqua, Nicolas Winding Refn was chosen to direct. Unlike Drive, The Equalizer's violence is meaningless and unnecessary. The Equalizer is an okay action thriller with a terrific lead performance by Denzel Washington.
