The Farewell

A Chinese family keeps their terminally ill matriarch in the dark about her prognosis in this Sundance hit comedy starring Awkwafina.

"After learning their beloved matriarch has terminal lung cancer, a family opts not to tell her about the diagnosis, instead scheduling an impromptu wedding-reunion back in China. Headstrong and emotional writer Billi (Awkwafina) rebels against her parents’ directive to stay in New York and joins the family as they awkwardly attempt to rekindle old bonds, throw together a wedding that only grandma is actually looking forward to, and surreptitiously say their goodbyes." Building on the seismic momentum triggered by last year’s mainstream breakthrough Crazy Rich Asians, The Farewell is yet another heartening, significant boost in Asian screen representation, and with a less ritzy, more reflective, working-class encapsulation of its themes, resonates even louder. If there ever was a story of my life, this is it.

At the heart of it all, is a terrific performance from Awkwafina. Best-known for her scene stealing turns in Ocean's Eight and Crazy Rich, here she adds an extra dimension of nuance and gravitas as a young woman clinging to her past and trying to forge her own path in life.

The little dramas and themes that emerge during the reunion of the film's far-flung brood become, like a family, more than the sum of its individual parts, and an incredibly satisfying meal of a film.

What makes "The Farewell" so effective is that in delving into such a specific case, the film invites audiences to reflect on the passing of relatives close to them.

There's an avoidance of obvious culture clash comedy... instead Wang deftly details both the guilt of living so far from family and how one's concept of what home really means can get so tangled.

The Farewell is everything a dramedy should be. Wet yourself funny one second and deeply poignant the next. It really has to be seen to be believed.
