The Venice Syndrome

Documentary examines the strain placed on the city of Venice by the twenty million tourists who visit each year. Now home to only 50,000 inhabitants, the city is sinking and one of the many factors behind this is the vibration and wash from the gigantic passenger liners bringing tourists in and out of once-glorious Venice – a place where property values soar and social services plummet. The Venice Syndrome features interviews with tourism workers, people forced to the mainland by cost of living increases and current residents to depict a city seemingly caught in the jaws of a tourism industry that won’t let go until it is dead.
