How to watch Bugonia in New Zealand

Emma Stone may or may not be an alien in the latest provocation from Greek weirdo Yorgos Lanthimos.

Greek weirdo director Yorgos Lanthimos is back, so you know we’re in for something strange and controversial. We can’t wait!

How to watch Bugonia in New Zealand

Bugonia is now screening exclusively in New Zealand cinemas.

What is Bugonia about?

Technically, the term “bugonia” refers to the ancient belief that bees were spontaneously generated from the corpses of cattle, which was an actual thing. Here, however, it’s a remake of the fairly obscure 2003 South Korean science fiction flick Save the Green Planet! (exclamation point theirs, not ours).

Our hero, for a certain value of “hero”, is disgruntled beekeeper Teddy Gatz, who becomes convinced that pharma boss Michelle Fuller is an alien “Andromedan” guilty of, among other things, colony collapse in bees—a direct concern for an apiarist. Enlisting his autistic cousin, Don, he kidnaps her, hoping to use her as a bargaining chip to encourage the Andromedan Emperor to quit Earth. Is there an Andromedan Emperor? Excellent question, dear reader, excellent question…

The cast of Bugonia

Emma Stone is pharmaceutical CEO Michelle Fuller; Jesse Plemons is Teddy Gatz, a conspiracy theory–obsessed beekeeper; Aidan Delbis is Teddy’s autistic cousin, Don; Stavros Halkias is Casey, a local police officer; Alicia Silverstone is Sandy Gatz, Teddy’s mother; and Cedric Dumornay is Chris.

Why we’re excited about Bugonia

We’re well and truly on the Yorgos Lanthimos train around these parts. His creative collaborations with muse Emma Stone have been a boon for arthouse cinema, well and truly raising the bar. Having said that, Yorgos gonna Yorgos: this is being billed as a black comedy, and his comedies are pretty goddamn black. So if you’re not braced for some boundary-pushing transgression, this might not be the movie for you. But if you know what you’re in for, get stuck into it…this is Lanthimos at his very best.
