What is Hedda about?
DaCosta both writes and directs this take on Ibsen’s play, which switches the setting to England in the 1950s and sees Tessa Thompson as the titular newlywed, who is playing every angle to ensure the social and professional success of her university professor husband, George. A party she has thrown to inveigle him with his employer, Professor Greenwood, seems to be going swimmingly, until the arrival of Hedda’s former lover, Eileen Lovborg. DaCosta queers the romance while fully engaging with the play’s themes of repression, thwarted ambition, and neurosis.

Why we’re excited about Hedda
Nia DaCosta and Tessa Thompson’s first collaboration, the 2018 drug drama Little Woods, is simply one of the best indies of the 21st century, and one of the most assured feature debuts to boot. They also worked together on The Marvels. So, we’re keen to see if if they can strike the same kind of sparks here. And considering that Gabler is considered one of the greatest stage roles of all time, the odds are good that they will.
