How to watch The Housemaid in New Zealand
This new thriller from the director of A Simple Favour looks maid to order.

Not to be confused with the excellent South Korean erotic thriller of the same name, which was released back in 2010, The Housemaid seems to have more DNA in common with the bunny boiler thrillers of the late ’80s and early ’90s. For example: The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, which got a remake very recently. It comes from director Paul Feig and star Sydney Sweeney.

What is The Housemaid about?
Sweeney is the titular domestic worker, Millie Calloway, who gets a gig cleaning and whatnot for the Winchesters, a wealthy family with a young daughter. She’s got a shady past, but it soon eventuates that something even shadier is going on with the Winchesters, forcing our heroine to start digging into the mystery. So it sounds like an interesting inversion of all those old thrillers.

Why we’re excited about The Housemaid
Sweeney is all the rage at the moment, and Feig has form when it comes to female-led neo-noirish films. Hopefully it’s close in tone to A Simple Favour, which currently stands as Feig’s last really freakin’ good movie. It’s more than possible, and the 2002 source novel by Freida McFadden was hugely popular, suggesting the narrative might resonate with multiplex audiences.
