Bub makes three in this new Australian sitcom.

Following on from the charming Aussie rom-com Top End Wedding, this upcoming series picks up the story of newlyweds Lauren and Ned a few years after the former’s desperate mission to track down her mother in time for her nuptials, with a new development that seems pretty clear from the title.

What is Top End Bub season 1 about?
Following on from the events of Top End Wedding, Top End Bub finds the now happily married Lauren and Ned living the newlywed life in Adelaide, only for tragedy to strike when Lauren’s sister in the Northern Territory dies in a car accident, orphaning eight-year-old Taya (the “bub” of the title). The two promptly depart for Darwin to assume guardianship for the waif, and we proceed from there. The eight episode series is co-created and co-written by Tapsell and Joshua Tyler, who wrote the original film, so that’s a good sign.

Why we’re excited about Top End Bub
Top End Wedding proved to be an absolute delight—a warm, funny romantic comedy rooted in Australian specificity that never resorted to the usual collection of tired ocker tropes. With the original creative team on board and a premise that doesn’t just reiterate the first film, Top End Bub is in with a good shot at recapturing the magic. And while history is littered with the corpses of failed Australian sitcoms, we’re well overdue for a win.
