What is Mortal Kombat II about?

Following on from Mortal Kombat, a fun flick that manages to set the narrative table while showcasing very little in the way of tournament martial arts, Mortal Kombat II sees thunder god Raiden recruiting more heroes for the coming war against interdimensional despot Shao Kahn. Chief among them is action movie star Johnny Cage, who’s about to swap stunts and safety glass for the real thing.

Expect lots of high-kicking action, gory kills, and a blistering soundtrack. Other than that, your guess is as good as ours. Australian director Simon McQuoid is once again calling the shots, with a script by Jeremy Slater.

Why we’re excited about Mortal Kombat II

You would think the formula for a successful Mortal Kombat flick is a simple one, but you’d be wrong—it takes a deft hand to get this sort of thing right. The last attempt made a pretty good fist of it, while not quite hitting the bullseye. This latest effort feels like it’s got the goods, but we won’t really know until opening day. Still, we’re quietly confident that we’ll hit our quota of gruesome fatalities and glorious action.
