The Running Man (2025): New Zealand trailer and release date

Glen Powell is on the lam in Edgar Wright’s remake.

Not to be confused with The Running Man (1987) which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger at the height of his Arnie-ness in a veeeery loose adaptation of Stephen King’s 1982 novel, which he published under his Richard Bachman pseudonym. This is a) coming out this year, b) stars the nigh-ubiquitous Glen Powell, and c) promises to hew closer to the original book. It’s also directed by Edgar Wright, rather than Starsky.

When is The Running Man (2025) being released in New Zealand?

The Running Man (2025) sprints into New Zealand cinemas on November 6, 2025.

What is The Running Man (2025) about?

In a grim, authoritarian future where the gap between the rich and the poor is crushingly wide and the masses are kept indoctrinated by a ceaseless barrage of mind-numbing mass media (wait a freakin’ minute…) everyman Ben Richards, desperate to support his sick wife and kid, signs up to compete in the titular game show. The gist is that he’ll be hunted to death for the enjoyment of the viewing audience, but he’ll accrue prize money the longer he lasts—and an absolute jackpot if he makes it all the way.

Which will all sound very familiar to those of us raised on a VHS diet, but where this film (and the book) differ from the ’87 adaptation is that our man is free to roam wherever he will as he legs it; he’s not confined to an enclosed combat zone. And further to that, not only is there a team of dedicated hunters on his trail, but anyone out there could snitch him for reward money—or just punch his ticket altogether.
