Mix Tape: Limited Series (June 12)
Ah, the ache of finding an old mix tape or CD that a long-lost lover burned for you long ago—recognising each nostalgic track, but perhaps not the young couple who first heard them. Aussie star Teresa Palmer and Brit Jim Sturgess capture that feeling in this bittersweet four-part romantic drama, playing two star-crossed characters brought back together by their musical memories of the past.
Meeting as teens in Sheffield in the late 80s, Alison and Daniel are swiftly swept up by life’s machinations, only reuniting in the mid-2010s and wondering how their adult lives might have turned out if they hadn’t parted. Building on a romance that was first sparked by the mixtapes they’d send one another, the pair have become very different people—but maybe, as they say, the song remains the same.
Justified: Seasons 1-6 (June 20)
Season one came out about 15 years ago now, but this wrongly underseen series is always ripe for a rewatch—especially with the fantastic Walton Goggins, who plays the series’ overarching, scene-stealing villain, becoming such a hot name of late. In this Kentucky-fried crime drama Timothy Olyphant plays a U.S. Marshal doling out his own questionable brand of justice. Each season features its own addictive arcs, challenging Olyphant’s image of himself as a white hat cowboy and serving up perfectly scripted deep South dialogue from a rangy hillbilly cast. Yee and haw.
The Backside of Television: Season 3 (June 30)
Mitch McTaggart is Australian TV’s hater supreme. Then again, he’s put out two seasons and several specials recounting the most absurd chapters in the medium’s history, so maybe it’s more of a cantankerously loving relationship? In the third instalment of his ongoing dive back into ‘the box’, you’ll learn more than you ever expected—and frankly, wanted—to know about our country’s dubious, problematic, and hilarious past. From shocking on-air mishaps to the forgotten homemade oddities that you totally watched as a kid and have never spent a second of nostalgic thought upon since, McTaggart is an expert in his field, peppering each anecdote with bitchy commentary. The irony that the show is on a streaming platform is not lost on the guy, either.
Top Picks: Movies
Smile 2 (June 4)
Hey, turn your frown upside down! One of 2024’s biggest horror surprises is now streaming, with a tremendously committed and elastic Naomi Scott playing a popstar being tormented by an evil, grinning demonic entity. The first film was well-executed enough, from writer and director Parker Finn—but he’s blown his own best efforts out of the water here, delivering genuinely unpredictable and almost comedic scares with creativity and aplomb.
The stakes are handily higher and more compelling: what if a globally famous diva began to go nuts in a very public fashion, seeing haunting visions that nobody else could see? What if she already has a dodgy history with substance abuse and tabloid scandal? Devilishly scary and fun.
Anora (June 11)
This year’s big Best Picture champ has been called a Cinderella story in reverse, or what happens in Pretty Woman after the credits roll. What I call it is a big win for independent cinema, with director Sean Baker getting to spread the good gospel of small films with huge ideas on a larger platform than ever before.
Mikey Madison won a gold statue, too, for her titular role: a Brooklyn poledancer who falls deep in, um…love? Lust? Transactional good vibes?…with a wealthy runaway hoodlum. The child of powerful Russian gangland figures who don’t want him shacking up with a gold digging American, her new hubby goes AWOL and leaves her in the clumsy clutches of the family’s hired heavies, leading to some troubling slapstick scenes and a bitterly realistic ending. Its best moments happen early on, capturing the whirlwind fantasy of a new romance that could change the direction of Ani’s life: a heady capitalist fairytale, where money is magic.
Wicked (June 26)
This mega-musical adaptation caused a wee bit of havoc during its cash-stacking cinema run, with some overeager patrons singing along from their theatre seats. Personally I do not think this is okay—you really reckon I came here to listen to Cynthia Erivo feat. You, random theatre kid in seat 8E? Shut up! And don’t get me started on people who belt along to live musical theatre…may a house fall on them, and may a lost Kansas farmgirl steal their shoes.
Luckily, with this tuneful Oz remix now available to stream, we can all try (and, with respect, fail) to sing along with Elphaba (Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande). A heartfelt confection that really doesn’t feel like its hefty 2+ hour runtime. Bring on part two!
