Outlander: Blood of my Blood (August 9)

What to do when your bodice-ripping period romance series wraps up? The solution’s simple: turn back the clock and watch the parents of your original characters each getting it on.

Some space-time shenanigans are already part of Outlander‘s canon, and so perhaps it’s not such a stretch that this prequel follows the parents of Jamie (in the 18th century Scottish Highlands) and Claire (in WWI-era England) with parallel focus. That’s double the amount of sexy costumed folks from the first show! More kilts! More kisses! And perhaps more time-travel—do we dare hope for a twisted parental foursome?

Peacemaker: Season 2 (August 22)

Did you spot John Cena for a brief second there, in James Gunn’s flash new Superman movie? The wrestler’s misguided, patriotic superhero is back for another season of kicking evil-doer ass, and I can only pray that they don’t change the ingenious, choreographed opening credits. New episodes of Peacemaker are dropping on the same day as the US, and the eight new episode promise “a newfound sense of purpose” for the helmeted kinda-hero.

Conclave (August 3)

Putting the Christ back in “Agatha Christie”, this Best Picture-nominated drama gives audiences access to one of the most hallowed, secretive situations possible: the Vatican’s selection process for a new pope. Ralph Fiennes is the Holy See’s fixer, of sorts, handling gossip and smear campaigns between the cardinals and perhaps sneakily hoping he might get to wear the big hat, himself.

Straight-laced and packed with talent (Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rosselini in a small but celebrated role as one of the Vatican’s nigh-invisible working nuns), the film educates and entertains at once, forcing the faithful and agnostic alike to question how and why the powerful end up in their seats. There’s a happy, curious ending, too.

Maria (August 16)

Angelina Jolie received rave reviews for her performance in this prestige-flecked biopic, chronicling the last days of the admired singer Maria Callas. It would be a real shame to hear mere cover versions of Callas’ devastating arias, and so biopic-hound Pablo Larraín instead makes the clever choice to generally use the original recordings—except for one, climactic breakdown, which sees Jolie’s own vocals coming to the fore in a powerful way.

The script is from Oscar-nominated writer Stephen Knight, with a focused framing of just the last week of the soprano’s life, before her death in Paris of a heart attack.
