The best movies and shows coming to Netflix in September

Check out Claire White’s highlights of what’s coming to Netflix New Zealand soon, followed by the full release schedule.

Top Picks: TV

Wrestlers (September 13)

From the creator of Last Chance U and Cheer comes an all-new docu-series obsession. Focusing on the world of professional wrestling, the series follows legendary wrestler Al Snow, as he fights to keep the professional wrestling league Ohio Valley Wrestling (the league which trained John Cena and Dave Bautista) in business. Full of passion, ambition and epic tales of battles between legends, nothing beats the storytelling of wrestling.

Surviving Summer: Season 2 (September 15)

Set and filmed along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, this Australian series about Summer, a rebellious teenage girl from Brooklyn, New York, transplanting to Australia and falling in with a local group of surfers is back for a new season. This time, Summer has been practicing her surfing and returns to Shorehaven determined to make the state team for the National surf comp. With friends, rivalry and love drama to boot, in a town where surfing is everything, could Surviving Summer be the new Blue Water High?

Sex Education: Season 4 (September 21)

Much like high school, even Sex Education has to end, now facing its fourth and final season. After the closure of Moordale, Otis, Eric and friends find themselves at an all-new school. While they struggle to figure out how they fit in the new environment, Maeve has a culture shock of her own as she settles into Wallace University in the US. Sex Education has been one of the best, most genuinely funny and heartfelt teen comedies of recent years, so it’ll be sad to see it go—but at least we can strap in (and strap on) for one final ride.

Top Picks: Movies + Specials

El Conde (September 15)

Soon after its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, a brand-new Pablo Larraín movie will arrive on Netflix. Shot in stunning black and white, El Conde is a dark satire about Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, who is not dead, but lives as an ageing 250-year-old vampire who wishes to finally meet his death. However, due to his many, many misdeeds, he cannot go as easily as he wishes. After the subtle horrors of Jackie and Spencer, it’s exciting to see Larraín do a dark comedy that explores and comments on Chile’s history.

Love at First Sight (September 15)

Based on the book The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E Smith, this film stars Haley Lu Richardson and Ben Hardy, as two people who meet and fall in love during their seven-hour flight from New York to London, only to lose contact with each other. I read the book when I was in high school, but the main drawcard here is Haley Lu Richardson herself. Last seen in season 2 of The White Lotus, the young actress imbues relatable, feel-good energy into every role that is so genuine, you can’t help but love her.

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (September 27)

Another film coming off of Venice is a new Wes Anderson film (no, not Asteroid City). At a run time of 39 minutes, it’s technically a short film, or alternatively, the length of about 39 TikToks (IYKYK). Based on a short story by Roald Dahl—Anderson’s second adaptation of his work—the story centres on a rich man who learns about someone who can see without using his eyes, a skill our protagonist tries to master in order to cheat at gambling. Starring Ralph Fiennes, Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel and Ben Kingsley, it will sure delight Anderson fans—or at the very least, fans of Anderson-style TikToks.
