Made of Honour

Made of Honour
Tom (Patrick Dempsey) and Hannah (Michelle Monaghan) have been platonic friends for 10 years, and have been following the old mantra 'don't screw the crew'. Tom is a serial lady’s man, while Hannah wants to settle into marriage. Then one day, oh my goodness, Tom finds himself falling in love with his best friend.

His problem is that Hannah's just got engaged to another man. When she asks Tom to be her 'maid' of honour, he agrees so he can try bring down the wedding from the inside.

Made of Honour is a nice cookie-cutter comedy, no more and no less, but (Dempsey and Monaghan)... rise to the challenge of making friendship look like the wellspring of true love.

There was a certain amount of suspense in the air at the screening of Made of Honour: Would Tom and Hannah realise they're perfect for each other... or would I burn down the theatre first?

The only thing that McDreamy proves with this film is that while he probably knows Julia Roberts and has met Julia Roberts, he's no Julia Roberts.

Director Paul Weiland and the three (!) screenwriters it took to boil down thousands of bad movies into 101 minutes haven't provided this one with a single original thought; it should only entertain those still getting adjusted to the idea of talkies.

This frothy rom-com that acts as a vehicle for tv sex symbol Patrick Dempsey is at its best in the wilds of remote Scotland, when Dempsey's New York serial womaniser Tom is out of his element. I laughed a few times, but overall was disappointed because nothing felt real. Not the characters, their relationships nor their actions.

Made of Honour is a rehash of Julia Roberts' My Best Friend's Wedding, mixed together with familiar ideas from other romantic comedies. While there is no doubt Patrick Dempsey is a handsome man, if he's serious about a career on the big screen he's going to have to prove he can do more than just look good, with perfectly blow-dried hair.

Has something a bit edgier in mind than the usual, soft-focused wedding bell high jinks. For the most part, that's exactly what it delivers -- an amusing, smartly cast romantic comedy told from a guy's perspective.

A strong opening, bursting with wit and vigour, gives way to a predictable, patronising and immensely lazy second half. Could have been so much more.

A mix of Four Weddings and a Funeral and My Best Friend's Wedding, by way of Run Fat Boy Run, Honour is a predictable yet peppy entry into the vast canon of romantic comedies.
