Italian World War II drama about the Marzabotto Massacre in which 770 civilians were murdered by German troops in 1944. Winner of Best Film at the David di Donatello Awards 2010.
"Winter, 1943 in countryside village, Bologna. Martina is a wide-eyed 8-year-old who hasn't spoken since her baby brother died in her arms. Now her mother Lena (Maya Sansa) is pregnant again, and Martina looks forward to the new arrival. But Lena and her husband, Armando (Claudio Casadio), along with the other peasants, are struggling to feed themselves and the families while war rages in Europe. As the villagers, underground resistance fighters and lodgers who've fled the cities debate how much assistance to give the partisans, the German SS arrives in Marzabotto, and Martina witnesses the massacre."
