Black Phone 2: New Zealand trailer and release date

As if just talking on the phone wasn’t anxiety-inducing enough…

2021’s The Black Phone was a pretty solid little slice of horrorm from the Doctor Strange and Sinister team of director Scott Derrickson and screenwriter C. Robert Cargill. Adapted from a short story—emphasis on short—by Joe Hill, it didn’t seem to leave too much room for expansion. But apparently Joe had an idea, Scott and Rob hit the keyboards, and now we’re about to go another round with kid-kidnapping villain, the Grabber, who we’re pretty sure was dead when the credits rolled on the last film.

When is Black Phone 2 being released in New Zealand?

Black Phone 2 hits New Zealand cinemas with the persistence of a dinner hour telemarketer from October 16, 2025.

What is Black Phone 2 about?

Excellent question! All we know is, we come in a few years down the track from the events of the first film, finding young Finney Blake and his psychic kid sister Gwen in high school now, with all its attendant problems and pressures. The pair are packed off to some kind of winter camp for kids, which I am assured is a thing in Colorado. Wouldn’t you know it? The masked marauder known as the Grabber starts prowling the park, which is a bit weird because Finney well and truly broke that guy’s goddamn neck at the climax of The Black Phone

The cast of Black Phone 2

Mason Thames is Finney Blake; Madeleine McGraw is his sister, Gwen; Ethan Hawke is once again the Grabber, and we should all be thankful for that; Jeremy Davies is Terrence Blake, Finney and Gwen’s dad, who was pretty useless when we last saw him, but perhaps the intervening years have worked wonders; Miguel Mora is Robin; and Demián Bichir, Arianna Rivas, and Anna Lore are in various undisclosed roles.

Why we’re excited about Black Phone 2

The first one was good, the same creative team are on board here, Ethan Hawke is the World’s Oldest Theatre Kid having the time of his life as a supernatural villain…what’s not to like?
