Dale Frank – Nobody’s Sweetie is now playing in New Zealand cinemas.

What is Dale Frank – Nobody’s Sweetie about?

Art!

Produced by Jenny Hicks and Sara Beard, with Hicks directing. Dale Frank – Nobody’s Sweetie takes us into the world of the reclusive artist, one of the mist important and revered painters still pushing paint in Australia. Mercurial and pugnacious, the 60-ish artist still has something of the enfant terrible about him, a combative and experimental attitude that marks all of his work. Over the course of his career, Frank has reveled in breaking down the boundaries between media and genres, mixing painting, drawing, sculpture, found objects, soundscapes, and even performance to create truly singular works of art that still attract controversy today.

The film follows Hicks preparation for an upcoming exhibition, working at his remote Hunter Valley property. It also covers his recent autism spectrum diagnosis, talking candidly about how the recent revelation has affected his view of both himself and his art. Veteran editor Hicks, who worked on The Matrix and The Thin Red Line, makes her directorial debut here, giving us a fascinating insight into a vital and unique artist.

Why we’re excited Dale Frank – Nobody’s Sweetie

Dale Frank is one of the great characters of the Australian art world, and his life is just as interesting as his work (never a guarantee). So this should be a cut above the usual hagiographic biographies found in this corner of the doco-sphere. And if you’ve never heard of him before, this is a perfect primer.
