How to watch Kangaroo in New Zealand

Ryan Corr gets a new lease on life in this upcoming Aussie family feature

Not to be confused with the recent and similarly titled Kangaroo Island, which is about an island, this is Kangaroo, which is about a kangaroo. Glad we got that cleared up.

How to watch Kangaroo in New Zealand

Kangaroo is screening in New Zealand cinemas from September 18, 2025.

What is Kangaroo about?

Inspired by animal rescuer Chris Barns and his Kangaroo Sanctuary in Alice Springs, Kangaroo sees Ryan Corr as burned out TV weatherman Chris Masterman, who is off on sabbatical in the outback to reclaim his mojo when he accidentally hits a kangaroo with his car. This leaves him with an orphaned joey on his hands, and brings him into contact with teen roo-rescuer Charlie, who helps him foster the cute little thing.

Lessons will no doubt be learned as the jaded TV star bonds with his jumpy little charge.

The cast of Kangaroo

Ryan Corr is Chris Masterman, Rachel House is Jesse, Lily Whiteley is Charlie, Brooke Satchwell is Liz, Deborah Mailman is Rosie, Rarriwuy Hick is Brenda, with Rick Donald, Ryan Clark, Wayne Blair, Trisha Morton-Thomas, Emily Taheny, and the great Ernie Dingo in support.

Why we’re excited about Kangaroo

For unfathomable reasons this is director Kate Woods’ first feature film in 25 years after Looking for Alibrandi, so that’s got us interested right off the bat. Certainly, it feels a little formulaic, but that’s a staggeringly charismatic cast, the location work from Alice Springs is suitably majestic, and the little leaper is cute as hell.

I’ve actually done a little wildlife rescue here and there over the years, and its rewarding and occasionally heartbreaking work, so it might be worth packing the tissues for this one. But with any luck this will be one of those break-out family film that Australia fangs out fairly regularly, and should be a good time for all and sundry.
