How to watch Weapons in New Zealand
The kids aren’t all right in the new film from the director of Barbarian.

Having already freaked us out with the excellent Barbarian, director Zach Cregger returns with the hotly anticipated, deeply unsettling, and rather mysterious Weapons.
How to watch Weapons in New Zealand
Weapons is creeping into New Zealand cinemas from August 7, 2025.
What is Weapons about?
One night, for completely inexplicable reasons, every child from teacher Justine Gandy’s middle school class disappears except one. That one kid aside, more than 20 young’uns flees their home in the middle of the night, seemingly vanishing off the face of the Earth. This quite understandably rocks the community, and the subsequent investigation threatens to tear the tiny community apart completely.
And that’s all we know. The mystery is the central hook here, so obviously they’re not letting too many details slip. It does all sound a bit Pied Piper to us, but that may be a red herring; we’ll find out soon enough. It might have its work cut out for it, trying to live up to the mid-movie swerve in Barbarian.
The cast of Weapons
Josh Brolin is Archer Graff, whose son Matthew, is one of the missing children; Luke Speakman is Matthew Graff, Archer’s son; Julia Garner is teacher Justine Gandy; Gary Christopher is Alex Lilly, the only kid left behind; Alden Ehrenreich is cop Paul Morgan; Austin Abrams is junkie criminal James; Benedict Wong is Andrew Marcus, the school principal; Amy Madigan is Gladys Lilly, Alex’s aunt; Whitmer Thomas is Mr. Lilly, Alex’s father; Callie Schuttera is Mrs. Lilly, Alex’s mother; and Toby Huss is Ed, the police captain.

Why we’re excited about Weapons
Well, we have to find out, right? That central enigma, plus the emotional hit of the old “kids in peril” bit certainly has us intrigued. Add to that the fact that early reviews have been overwhelmingly enthusiastic, and this unnerving little chiller is one of our most eagerly anticipated horror movies of the year.
