Primate: UK trailer and release date

A new horror movie is here to remind us that chimpanzees are absolutely terrifying.

Here’s the thing about chimpanzees: they’re absolutely terrifying, erratic, unpredictable monsters strong enough to pull the doors off a Mini Cooper, who can and will inflict the most horrific injuries on people dumb enough to keep them as pets. And now, here comes a movie about people dumb enough to keep one as a pet! This is going to be so very, very satisfying.

When is Primate being released in Australia?

Primate is screening exclusively in UK cinemas from January 30, 2026.

What is Primate about?

Well, there’s this monkey, see?

Actually, that’s wrong from the jump…chimps are apes. But, in the shell of a nut, a group of attractive young people are partying at the cliffside Hawaiian home of their friend, Lucy. Lucy’s late mother rescued and raised a baby chimp named Ben, who is still a cute little thing (chimps generally get aggressive once they hit puberty) until he gets bitten by a mongoose and contracts rabies. After this Cujo-like (and slightly unnecessary) twist, things get pretty horrific pretty quickly, and some pretty young things get a lot less pretty (they like to go for the face).

This one comes to us from British director Johannes Roberts, who also gave us the sharky 47 Metres Down movies. So he knows his way around a creature feature.

The cast of Primate

Johnny Sequoyah is Lucy; Miguel Torres Umba is Ben, our monkey murderer; Jessica Alexander is Hannah; Troy Kotsur is Adam, Lucy’s hearing-impaired father; Victoria Wyant is Kate; Gia Hunter is Erin; Benjamin Cheng is Nick; Charlie Mann is Drew; Tienne Simon is Phil; and Kae Alexander is Yoko.

Why we’re excited about Primate

Well, it’s been a while since we had a good monkey attack movie, hasn’t it? Nope is an edge case; the last really good one was probably George A. Romero’s Monkey Shines, all the way back in 1988. If this is half as good as that banger, we’re in for a gruesomely great time.
