What is Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story about?
Christopher Reeve, that’s who—the Julliard-trained actor who set the benchmark for onscreen portrayals of the Man of Steel in Richard Donner’s 1978 Superman, before being paralysed from the neck down during an accident at an equestrian event in 1995. The film, directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, examines Reeve’s legacy, covering his entire life and career, with particular focus on his post-accident rehabilitation and his work as a disability rights activist. This included working with what is now named the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, a charity that funds research into curing spinal cord injuries.
Plenty of famous friends show up in this one, but it’s the presence and memories of his children that are going to wreck you.
The cast of Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story
Christopher Reeve, obviously; his wife, Dana, who died of lung cancer not long after Reeve’s 2004 death; his children Matthew Reeve, Will Reeve, and Alexandra Reeve Givens; Robin Williams, who was Reeve’s classmate at Juilliard; director Richard Donner, Glen Close, Johnny Carson; Susan Sarandon, and more. A depressing number of those are from archival footage.
