When will Joker: Folie à Deux be released in New Zealand

We’re going gaga over the sequel to the controversial comic book adaptation.

All the way back in 2019, Todd Phillips’ revisionist Joker was arguably the most controversial film of the year. But it also made over a billion dollars, so a sequel was inevitable. But it seems Phillips is not a man to take the easy route, so we’re getting something way, way wilder than we might have expected. But when?

When is Joker: Folie à Deux being released in New Zealand?

Joker: Folie à Deux hits cinemas in New Zealand on October 3.

What is Joker: Folie à Deux about?

Excellent question! We really only know two key elements in play. The first is that Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, now banged up in Arkham State Hospital after the events of the first film, meets one Dr. Harleen Quinzel, played by none other than Lady Gaga—and fans know how that’s going to turn out in the broad strokes. The second is that Joker: Folie à Deux is apparently a musical—although whether that means a full-blown musical production or not is anyone’s guess. Oh, and apparently Gotham District Attorney Harvey Dent is turning up in this one, with casting yet to be announced, expanding Phillips’ version of the larger Batman mythos.

The cast of Joker: Folie à Deux

Obviously Joaquin’s on board, freshly returned from war-torn Napoleonic Europe, and Lady Gaga, plus Zazie Beetz is back as Sophie Dumond, which seemingly resolves an ambiguity in the first film. In addition, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Harry Lawtey are in the mix, although who they’re playing is anyone’s guess.

Joker: Folie à Deux trailer

Ahahahahahaha nup. There are about a million fake “concept” trailers out there, though. Here, revisit the OG.

Why we’re excited about Joker: Folie à Deux

The simple fact is that we have absolutely no idea what we’re getting. It seems ambitious, and off-kilter, and determined to defy expectations. The most important question is if that box office bonanza will allow Phillips free reign, or whether the troubled Warner Brothers will clamp down on his creativity, afraid to alienate any potential audience. Let’s hope the imminent trailer indicates the former rather than the latter.
