Top picks

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Season 2 (December 10)

Heaps of kids go through a Greek mythology phase at some stage, for whatever reason (*meekly raises hand*). Rick Riordan’s kid-friendly novels were right there to inflame that curiosity into teen obsession. In this episodic adaptation’s sophomore series, Percy Jackson (son of sea god Poseidon, one of Olympus’s many deadbeat dads) must take a dip into the Sea of Monsters, bond with his cyclops half-brother, and find the Golden Fleece.

These are all epic, mythic, very familiar elements, reimagined for today’s imaginative youngsters to feel like any other expansive YA world—with a camp for chosen-one children, monsters, and adventures in friendship and destiny to be had.

Taylor Swift: The End of an Era (December 12)

It truly is Taylor’s world, and we are merely living in it. Not only did her juggernaut Eras Tour take over stadiums and then cinemas, its very conclusion also deserves a six-episode behind-the-scenes docuseries. In the time since this show would’ve been put together, she’s already had two new ‘eras’ of sorts, or at least new albums. And I’m sure her fans, who are utterly terrifying in their zealous devotion, wouldn’t want it any other way.

Besties like Gracie Abrams, Ed Sheeran and Sabrina Carpenter will be spotlighted along the way, between intimate reflections from Swift herself on what it’s like to perform an hours-long tribute to oneself every night for what felt like years and years. The limited series is accompanied by a new concert film, capturing the tour’s very last stop, in Vancouver, Canada.

Abbott Elementary: Season 5 (December 17)

This delightfully fresh comedy proved the evergreen longevity of the workplace sitcom and the mockumentary format, following the overworked staff of an underfunded public school in Philly. Creator and star Quinta Brunson had deserved this kind of big-hearted, laugh-out-loud production for a while, first making her name in charming internet content. And here it is, five seasons in!

Production was suspended for a bit due to California’s wildfires, but the show is still going strong and collecting awards, too, especially when it comes to Sheryl Lee Ralph’s breakout character of buttoned-up kindergarten teacher Barbara.
