The Peripheral: Season 1 (October 21)
Kinda like Last Night in Soho but with the swinging past swapped for a vibrant future, The Peripheral stars Chloë Grace Moretz in a twisted sci-fi vision from the influential brain of William Gibson. She’s holding down two thankless jobs in the rural South, one of which involves travelling through VR worlds for the pleasure of rich clients—but it turns out her journeys aren’t so “virtual”, actually sending her into a futuristic London somehow. 70 years ahead, a door has opened into the character’s world, and we’re gonna be welcome too for a full season of fantasy and mystery.
Catherine Called Birdy (October 7)
Bella Ramsey did such a terrific job playing the ferocious and precocious Lady Lyanna Mormont in GoT: casting her in a feature-length period comedy about a similar pre-medieval brat dodging her arranged marriage seems like a no-brainer. Lena Dunham directs and Andrew Scott and Billie Piper star as Lady Catherine’s put-upon parents, who will surely have no luck reigning her in and finding her a suitor. Apparently it’s been a longtime passion project for Dunham, who has loved the children’s book of the same name since childhood.
High School: Season 1 (October 28)
If you’ve ever been moved by the yearning indie tunes of Canadian pop duo Tegan and Sara, get ready to learn all about their so-called teen life. The autobiographical coming-of-age series has a few unique qualities to distinguish it from the slate of high school programming: there’s that pungent 90s grunge setting, and the fact that our heroines are identical twins, forced to struggle with their own identities whilst being constantly compared to the person they’re closest to in the world. Plus Cobie Smulders plays their mum!
