Top picks

All’s Fair: Season 1 Premiere (November 4)

A legal drama led by one Kimberley Noel Kardashian, relegating such stellar and experienced performers as Sarah Paulson, Glenn Close, Naomi Watts, Niecy Nash and Teyana Taylor to supporting roles?! This splashy, star-studded new series is en route to girlboss far too close to the sun, featuring gaggy guest stars and outrageous costumes.

It follows fierce female divorce lawyers who split off to start their own firm, proving that women can do anything they set their minds to. Except writing a TV show, it seems: the trio of showrunners who developed this stridently feminist, yass queen project are all men, hilariously enough, including public TV enemy number one Ryan Murphy. The prosecution rests, no further questions your honour!

The Fantastic Four: First Steps (November 5)

They’re an odd bunch, the Richards-Storm Clan and Co., with goofy superpowers straight out of the Silver Age of comic books that can be difficult to adapt to the big screen. Even with the star quality of Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby and breakout stars from The Bear and Stranger Things, I found Marvel’s latest attempt to dramatise the foursome a bit less than fantastic.

What the movie does offer, however, is refreshingly retro and imaginative production design, with gorgeous woollen superhero suits and bleeping-blooping gadgetry straight out of a 1960s sci-fi caper. Michael Giacchino’s twinkly, effervescent score also elevates the whole project.

Freakier Friday (November 12)

What could be simpler than a bit of mother-daughter-bonding, encouraged by supernatural body swapping? Reuniting Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan a few decades on from their last switcheroo, this legacy sequel takes a neat scenario and makes it much more complicated. Now, it’s Lohan and Curtis swapping into the bodies of Lohan’s daughter and step-daughter, who are frenemies struggling to accept the blended family they’ve found themselves in.

It’s the ultimate formula for intergenerational comedy, confronting daggy elders and embarassed, whiney youths with the realities of one anothers’ lives. And yes, of course the original film’s astoundingly catchy pop-punk soundtrack will get a tasteful second spin, too.
