Love, Death & Robots: Volume 4 is streaming in New Zealand exclusively on Netflix, with all 10 episodes available.
What is Love, Death & Robots: Volume 4 about?
We would have thought the title was pretty self-explanatory, but in detail: Love, Death & Robots is an animated sci-fi anthology series created by Deadpool and Terminator: Dark Fate (underrated—give it another crack) director Tim Miller, with David Fincher (Fight Club) on executive producer duties. It was born out of an abandoned attempt to reboot the old Heavy Metal anthology movie for a modern audience.
The essential gist is that a variety of animation studios each produce an episode, often based on an an extant short story, with volume four adapting works by the likes of cyberpunk guru Bruce Sterling and Marc Laidlaw (in fact, Laidlaw’s story, “400 Boys”, which inspired episode four, was collected in the 1986 book Mirrorshades: The Cyberpunk Anthology, which Sterling edited).

Absolutely no word on who they’re playing as yet, but expect to hear the voices of Dan Stevens, JB Blanc, Jim Broadbent, Nika Futterman, Jane Leeves, and Dave B. Mitchell.

Why we’re excited about Love, Death & Robots: Volume 4
We love anthology series, we love sci-fi, and anthology series are the perfect format for science fiction on screen, as much as the short story is the perfect format on the page. It’s enough room to explore one idea without getting lost in the weeds of world-building. And the great thing about anthologies is this: if you get a dud episode, you know the next one will be completely different. We’ll keep watching these as long as they keep making ’em.
