In exciting news for cinemagoers, EVENT Cinemas Queensgate in Lower Hutt is reopening in December with the best in big-screen technology – in time for Avatar: The Way of Water.
For over twenty years, whenever we’ve gotten excited about seeing films on the giant IMAX screen, we’ve really only been talking about Auckland, where IMAX has been in operation since 1999.
Welcomely, the Wellington region will soon also be able to take in the advanced, awesome theatre experience with the reopening of Event Cinemas Queensgate in December. The Lower Hutt cinema complex will boast seven cinema screens and showcase IMAX with Laser—which sounds like the perfect way to see Avatar: The Way of Water.
As explained in EVENT’s press release, “IMAX with Laser has been developed from the ground-up to be immersive by design and deliver crystal clear, lifelike images and precision audio for a movie going experience unlike anything else. It is unmatched with a ground-breaking 4K laser projection system that features a new optical engine, custom designed lenses, and a suite of proprietary technology that delivers brighter images with increased resolution, deeper contrast, and the widest range of colours exclusively to IMAX screens.”
Every cinema in the EVENT Cinemas Queensgate precinct will also have a range of seating options—from standard seats to full recliners and the new double daybeds.

• Double Daybeds – This is the ultimate movie watching experience. Guests can really relax and enjoy the movie in their very own daybed, positioned in the front of the cinema for the perfect unobstructed view.
• VMAX – The EVENT Cinema big screen blockbuster movie experience. VMAX cinemas feature stadium seating with a giant state-of-the-art digital screen and Dolby Atmos sound.
The cinema chain will also be introducing PLAY by Event Cinemas. A new look arcade experience featuring all the latest games from around the world!
