Brad Pitt’s supreme space pic – and every movie & show departing Netflix in July

As any Netflix viewer knows, with one hand the streamer may giveth movies and series, but with the other it taketh away… Steve Newall lets you know what’s leaving Netflix each month, so you can arrange some last-chance viewing accordingly.

My list of the 50 best movies on Netflix always requires adjustments each month—and July sees the departure of superb space thriller Ad Astra.

A supremely successful man-on-a-mission space pic, Ad Astra thrills in both its truly nerve-wracking action/sci-fi set pieces (in Earth’s orbit, on the Moon and beyond) and in its more down-tempo character moments. Central to this is Brad Pitt’s stupendous performance, laying a foundation with measured minimalism that anchors the film’s echoes of Apocalypse Now and even maybe a little Total Recall—though even when it’s treating us to sights like a sweet lunar buggy duel, it’s with a sombre seriousness.
