NZ Fraud Film Festival to screen Paul T Goldman, one of 2023’s craziest shows, in its entirety

Currently unavailable on Aotearoa small screens, one of 2023’s craziest series Paul T Goldman is instead heading to the big screen for a marathon screening thanks to the NZ International Fraud Film Festival.

All six episodes of docuseries Paul T Goldman will play on Wednesday night 29 March at Hollywood Avondale (doors open 5:30pm for a 6:30pm start) and will include a Q&A with director Jason Woliner and journalist/filmmaker David Farrier (Mister Organ)—tickets available here via Hollywood Avondale. It’s considered one of the craziest shows you will see this year, even if the official synopsis seems rather sane: One man’s efforts to uncover the truth thrust him into a labyrinth of fraud, deception, and criminality that transform him “from wimp to warrior”.

These pull quotes, however…

“A spectacular television experience. An insane story told in an insane way” – Nathan Fielder

“Thrilling, utterly captivating, and the most wonderfully meta-treatment of the documentary form I’ve seen.” – David Farrier

“Unlike anything you have seen. It’s a true life crime drama & simultaneously a launch of a new action hero.” – Paul Scheer

“It’s absolutely brilliant” – Julie Klausner

The NZ International Fraud Film Festival sheds a little bit more light on what to expect: Paul wrote a book about his life, turned it into a screenplay, and decided to star in it—and for over ten years director Jason Woliner (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Nathan For You) has fought to bring Paul’s vision to life. Paul T Goldman is the bizarre true story of one man’s dogged determination to uncover the truth about his ex-wife, and to become a successful author, screenwriter and actor.

The show features scenes from Paul’s screenplay, with Paul playing himself opposite professional actors (including a number of familiar faces). It also documents its own production, the relationship between Paul and Jason, and casts a critical eye on Paul and his version of events.

This marathon session screens as part of the NZ International Fraud Film Festival, which is playing a selection of fraud-related stories on March 29 & 30 at Q Theatre. Titles include The Talented Mr. Rosenberg, Gaming Wall Street, Nothing Lasts Forever, The Lost Leonardo and China Hackers. There’s also a scam prevention session with Aotearoa TV institution Fair Go.
