Road House: NZ trailer and release date

Jake Gyllenhaal pulls on the late Patrick Swayze’s slim-fit jeans for this remake of the 1989 video store perennial. It looks like a real good time.

When is Road House being released in New Zealand?

Road House is being released in New Zealand exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on March 21.

What is Road House about?

Well, there’s this road house, see?

But seriously, this is a remake of the cult classic actioner of the same title that saw Swayze’s Zen asskicker bring Ben Gazzara’s shady small town businessman/crime boss to heel with a combination of philosophy and ripping out throats. The 2024 version, directed by The Bourne Identity helmer Doug Liman, sees Gyllenhaal as former UFC fighter Elwood Dalton, who takes a gig cleaning up a Florida bar—and “cleaning up” is a metaphor for “caving in heads”. So, it doesn’t look like they’ve messed around with the formula too much.

The cast of Road House

In addition to Gyllenhaal, we’re getting Daniela Melchior as love interest Ellie; Billy Magnussen as Brandt, the villain of the piece; UFC superstar Conor McGregor in an undisclosed role; plus Jessica Williams, Joaquim de Almedia, Darren Barnett, Beau Knapp, Lukas Gage, J.D. Pardo, Arturo Castro, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Hannah Love Lanier, Travis Van Winkle, B.K. Cannon, Dominque Columbus, Bob Menery, and Kevin Carroll.

Why we’re excited about Road House

The OG is a classic meat ‘n’ potatoes action flick that still has loyal fans decades later, but the new one has the advantage of a ripped AF Gyllenhaal once again flexing his action muscles after the recent Ambulance. That alone should be worth the price of admission (or subscription, in this case). There’s something about a no-frills beat ’em up that speaks to us on a very primal level, and he must heed that call. It could use more Sam Elliot, though—but then again, couldn’t every movie?
