Armando Iannucci brings the incisive and profane style of UK political comedy The Thick of It to the big screen with this largely Washington D.C.-set spinoff—with the help of a writing team including Succession‘s Jesse Armstrong. Released in 2019, the film takes a bleak look at the drumbeat for war, as certain factions in both the US and UK seek to build support for a fresh Middle East conflict. The stakes are high, but many of the film’s best moments are brutal and personal, not least of all the expletive-heavy brow-beatings dished out by Malcolm Tucker (Peter Capaldi). And I’m still using the phrase “room meat” to describe people in meetings just to make up the numbers:
Depending on how current geopolitics, particularly the behaviour of the United States’ current government, affect you, In the Loop may either be the best or worst possible current viewing. Hey, up to you… but a cast including the likes of Tom Hollander, James Gandolfini, Anna Chlumsky and Steve Coogan surely can’t hurt.
