How to watch Deadloch in New Zealand

From award-winning comedy duo Kate McCartney and Kate McLennan comes a new comedy series that skewers that very particular stripe of grim, small town murder mystery that’s been clogging up our screens these past several years. Satirical crime comedy Deadloch is now streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime Video, with new episodes dropping each Friday.

When a man is murdered in the titular tiny Tasmanian town of Deadloch, local copper Dulcie Collins (Kate Box of Wentworth and Rake) is out of her depth, the local criminal element normally not aspiring to anything as OTT as homicide. Luckily—or not, as the case may be—a tough-talking detective from Darwin arrives to work that case, in the form of Eddie Redcliffe (Madeliene Sami). Along with local plods Abby Matsuda (Nina Oyama) and Sven Alderman(Tom Ballard), they dig into the dirty deed, only for more bodies to start cropping up…

The Kates, as they’re affectionately known, are top tier Australian comedy talent. The Katering Show gave us the immortal refrain “hot, wet rice”, while the final episode of Get Krack!n, featuring Miranda Tapsell and Nakkiah Lui, is assured a place in Australian television history. Deadloch marks their first foray into longform, scripted narrative comedy, and we’re keen for it.

Really, this subgenre of thriller is ripe for parody. Dogged cops have been poking around small towns with dark secrets and complex social webs for decades (it was old when Twin Peaks did it in the ‘90s, and recent offerings have been doubling down on grim self-seriousness) between The Dry, Black Snow, Troppo, Savage River, and more, you could be forgiven for thinking every small town in Australia is a hotbed of homicide and sordid conspiracies (and you’re not too far wrong, TBH). At least Deadloch will be good for a laugh! We don’t think Eric Bana cracked a single joke in The Dry
