Feast your googly eyes on this year’s Oscar nominees

Everything Everywhere All at Once dominates the Oscar nominations in every possible dimension. Travis Johnson runs through this year’s nominees.

Blockbuster sequels Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick get nods, but The Daniels’ mindblowing martial arts movie was what won the Academy’s favour.

Everything Everywhere All at Once, the trans-dimensional arthouse martial arts movie by filmmaking duo The Daniels (aka Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert), has been lauded with a staggering 11 nominations at the 95th Academy Awards (and helping distributor A24 lead other studios with 17 noms in total).

The critical and commercial darling has been nominated for best picture, director(s), costume design, editing, original song, original score and original screenplay, with Hong Kong cinema legend Michelle Yeoh up for Best Actress, comeback kid Ke Huy Quan in the running for Best Supporting Actor, and Stephanie Hsu nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

It’s a big moment for Asian representation, with Yeoh now the first Asian performer nominated in that category, while Hong Chau’s Best Supporting Actress nomination making a total of four Asian nominees in the acting awards—a record.

Sadly, the other spectacular Asian action movie of the year, S. S. Rajamouli’s anti-colonial epic RRR, was only acknowledged for Best Song (and it’s a very good song) with a nomination for the absolute banger “Naatu Naatu”—the film’s sole nomination despite widespread critical acclaim.

But it was a good year for long-awaited sequels, with both Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water getting Best Picture nods, although expected nominations for Tom Cruise (Best Actor) and James Cameron (Best Director) failed to materialise.

Other Best Picture nominees include All Quiet on the Western Front, The Fabelmans, Triangle of Sadness, Women Talking, Elvis, Tár, and The Banshees of Inisherin, with Martin McDonagh’s bleak dramedy also picking up nominations for directing, editing, original screenplay, score, Best Actor (Colin Farrell), Best Supporting Actor (Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan), and Best Supporting Actress (Kerry Condon).

Some nominations seemed predestined. Despite Yeoh’s strong showing, it’s widely accepted that the Best Actress category is Cate Blanchett’s to lose thanks to her turn in Tár but countering that is a surprise nomination for Ana de Armas’ ersatz Marilyn Monroe in Blonde, a controversial pick from a divisive picture. Baz Luhrmann being shut out of Best Director for Elvis is a shock, but in a strong field that includes Steven Spielberg for The Fabelmans, Todd Field for Tár, and Ruben Östlund for Triangle of Sadness, it’s difficult to say who the extravagant Australian auteur should replace.

Still, it’s been a good day for veteran thesps Jamie Lee Curtis (Best Supporting Actress) and Bill Nighy (Best  Actor), each receiving their first Academy Award nominations for Everything Everywhere All at Once and Living, respectively.

Despite some disappointing shut outs (not a single nomination for Park Chan-wook’s Decision to Leave or Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Woman King? No Best Cinematography for Nope?) this is one of the strongest Oscar fields in years. The 95th annual Academy Awards take place on March 12, 2023. Check out the full list of nominees below.
