Parasite wins Best Picture at the 2020 Academy Awards (full list of winners)

Filmmaker Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite made history at the 92nd Academy Awards by becoming the first Best Picture winner not in the English language. Pulling off an incredible upset against hot favourites 1917 and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the South Korean thriller claimed three other Oscars that night—Best International Feature, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Director—and was nominated for two more—Best Editing and Best Production Design.

“After winning Best International feature, I thought I was done for the day,” director Bong said in his Best Director acceptance speech. “When I was young and studying cinema, there was a saying that I carved deep into my heart, which is, ‘The most personal is the most creative.’ That quote was from our great Martin Scorsese.” Scorsese, also a Best Director nominee for The Irishman, was in attendance.

1917 claimed the second largest number of Oscars with three wins, including Roger Deakins’ second win for Best Cinematography (his first being Blade Runner 2049). Taika Waititi also scored big, winning Best Adapted Screenplay for Jojo Rabbit. After thanking his mum, author Christine Leunens, and his producers, Waititi dedicated his win to all the indigenous kids, stating “we are the original storytellers, and we can make it here as well.”

The acting categories held no surprises. Joaquin Phoenix picked up Best Lead Actor for Joker, Renee Zellweger secured her win for Judy, Brad Pitt added to his Globe and BAFTA with an Oscar for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and so did Laura Dern for Marriage Story.
